Editorial Director, Fashion/Lifestyle Site (Freelance to Hire, New York, NY)
Role: Editorial Director (1744)
Client: Media Company
Type: Freelance to Hire
Location: New York, NY
Overview:
The Hired Guns are seeking a mega-talented Editorial Director for our client, a media company devoted to changing the online shopping experience. The editor who can pull this off is a visionary and tastemaker with a unique POV and voice and the chops to handle the day-to-day intensity of running a dynamic online property all about fashion and lifestyle.
Gun Profile:
First and foremost, you’re a writer’s editor. You know how to nurture and build teams, and the best and brightest want to work with you. You’re inspiring, hard-charging and dogged in your pursuit of building high-quality, non-pandering content for women. For this client, we need an editor who can help our client establish itself as a fashion, celebrity, and pop culture authority. If that’s your area of expertise, and you can prove it – read on!
You revel in the tempo of a daily site or blog. You are a modern editor who knows what works on the Web and can change course rapidly in response to what’s new and what’s hot. You’ve got a terrific media pedigree, having worked at established publishers and well-trafficked sites. A background working in fashion, beauty, news, celeb, music, decor, lifestyle or women’s sites is a plus … and an interest in style and shopping is a must.
You have a solid understanding of how to drive online content, apps, and strategic partnerships from concept through launch. (If you’ve built a personal blog or other content sites from the ground up, make sure to highlight that on your resume.) The musts for this role include significant online editorial and product development experience. You have lived, breathed and eaten online content management. And you know how to get great quality content out the door quickly and correctly. You must have a strong understanding of SEO and social media as tools for brand building, audience expansion and engagement.
We’re interested in everything you can bring to the table to differentiate yourself in this role. Prepare to talk about your solid network of industry contacts, including PR professionals, fellow editors and fashion industry stars on the rise. And prove to us that you’re a total go-getter, who won’t want or need a lot of hand-holding from upper management .
Nitty-Gritty:
In this role, you’ll be leading content development for a suite of fashion and beauty sites, as well as getting the chance to launch a brand new property. You will work closely with Product Management to solidify the vision. It will be your mandate to develop the voice, tone and mix of content to fulfill the overall editorial strategy. You will construct the editorial calendar to ensure original, articulate, compelling and differentiated content. You will liase with other teams within the company, including PR to promote and represent the company through various media outlets and Sales to support advertising initiatives and revenue-generating opportunities.
The people behind this company’s site are SEO rockstars: they will get you the eyeballs. Your job will be to grab those eyeballs and convert their owners into fans of your site. In addition to fresh editorial perspective, our client wants a true executive producer – meaning you have the gusto and conviction to evolve the product. Sure, you live for clothing, hair, make-up, beauty and shoes; but more importantly, you have a POV – and get fashion’s importance in pop culture. That’s why we need a Web 2.0-savvy editor who likes to get under the hood and tinker. The site has several areas devoted to different style genres ranging from classic to edgy to contemporary to girly. Within each genre, a reader will be able to discover the fashion, beauty, lifestyle, current news, entertainment, advice, etc. that pertains to her world-view and personal style.
We don’t need a fashion know-it-all so much as a creative visionary who can manage out-of-the-box people and take them to the next level. You will hire a cadre of content creators who are experts in their vertical and have the voice and personal style to pull it off. With them you will assemble one killer team and make it a veritable fountain of fresh original content.
Divas need not apply. While the company is well established, this property is very much in start-up mode, and you have to be willing and able to do a little bit of everything.
Inside Skinny:
Besides all of the above, the ideal gun also has the clout and confidence to serve as the spokesperson for this media company. So if you have a reel and clips, bring them on, and let’s make Rachel Zoe your foil! Bonus points if you have experience producing audio (podcast) and video content for the Web.
