THG @ SXSW 2013: The Future of Corporate Alumni Networking

SXSW voting is upon us and we need your help! The Guns’ panel, “Corporate Alums: Why Big Companies Invest in Ex-Employees” is up for voting over at SXSW.com and we’d really appreciate your support. Our panel, headed up by yours truly, is all about the increasing role that corporate alumni relations is playing and will play in the future of professional networking. My fellow panelists are amazing (and humbling) and head up the corporate alumni networks at companies like Morgan Stanley and IBM. Find out more after the jump.

Last year at SXSW, I ran a session called “Manage With Care: Employees are Your Future Clients.” In doing my research for part of my talk, I met with some of the best minds and thinkers in and around Corporate Alumni Networks, including Morgan Stanley’s Leslie Bradford, McKinsey’s Sean Brown, and IBM’s Jacelyn Swenson. So, this year we decided to submit a panel together specifically on corporate alumni networks entitled “Corporate Alums: Why Big Companies Invest in Ex-Employees.”

If you’re not familiar with the concept of corporate alumni relations, it works just like the alumni network at your dear old alma mater: people who’ve gone their separate ways stay connected through a past shared experience. These networks are fast becoming one of the best ways to find out about new jobs and business opportunities, both at past employers and at new companies started by former colleagues. Many of these opportunities are never made public and are filled through referrals only, so keeping in touch is more crucial than ever. These networks come in many forms — both formal and informal –  and should play a key role in any modern job search strategy.

We would love your support in helping us get our panel into SXSW 2013. Your vote counts for 30% of our score. It actually matters a lot, so please vote! Voting ends at midnight on August 31 and sign up (though who isn’t already signed up for SXSW?) is quick and painless. If you aren’t signed up:

  1. Visit the sign up page. It only takes a second. We promise.
  2. You’ll get a confirmation email right away. Once you confirm your membership, just head over here.
  3. Click the “Thumbs Up” icon in the upper left. You’ll feel the good karma come your way immediately.

PROTIP: We also get super-duper bonus points if you leave a comment!

But this isn’t all about us! Tell us about your own SXSW plans. Got a panel? On a panel? Share it with us in the comments below or at @TheHiredGuns. We love to brag about all the amazing stuff our network is doing, so we’ll take all your submissions and include them in a blog post later in the week!

We have but one over-arching rule for comments: Do not add to the chaos of the universe.

  • This blog is devoted to developing a point of view around the Future of Work through the lens of the digital creative class. It offers some of the best career writing out there to help you get ahead as well as some brand new bloggers livin' the dream and tellin' it like it is. We encourage you to use the comments to drive conversations to the next level, bounce ideas off our bloggers, challenge them, and engage in dialogue with your fellow readers.
  • Disagreement is fine. If one of our bloggers gets your goat, say so, but elevate the conversation. Substantiate. Strive to teach. Your words might actually change someone's opinion. Don't just rant.
  • Sign your name. Anonymity makes you a wimp.
  • If you're just commenting to get your handle out there, please be clever about it. Or witty. We'll delete unimaginative self-promotion.
  • We'll also likely delete comments that are vulgar, inadvertently or maliciously off-topic, spammy, creepy or sloppy.
