Digital Editor-In-Chief, Sports News

We’re drafting a top-of-the-line Digital Editor who can lead a complete rethink of a leading sports brand.  On the content side, solid expertise within the sports vertical (particularly NFL, NCAA and the other big leagues) and time spent driving a digital news organization would be the one-two punch. You’ll have them kneeling like Tebow if you can also demonstrate a strong track record in delivering major traffic gains for the properties you’ve run.

Gun Profile:

You’ve served as an editorial leader at a top digital property with a focus on sports, pop culture, or news.  Your versatility is unmatched — you’ve created online products straight out of your brain, have developed content for every platform, and have a knack for knowing what readers want. When it comes to management, you’ve led editors, reporters and stringers from around the world.  Your devotion to stats and data has served you well not only in the sports world but as a modern editor — your love of analytics gives you a clear edge.  You have a proven track record of growth in uniques, page views and overall audience engagement for the sites you’ve helmed.  We think the ideal candidate may be a strong Number Two who’s been looking for the right opportunity to come out of the shadows and lead a big property in your own right.  And it goes without saying that you’ve mastered organic search. You are a skilled diplomat who can work effectively with the many other stakeholders who are outside your immediate orbit and influence.  Above all else, you make everyone around you dream big, and then you actually deliver against that mandate.

Nitty Gritty:

The playbook on this dream gig is simple: we want an editor who can establish voice and point of view for the relaunch of a top digital sports franchise.  As part of the relaunch you’ll re-prioritize sections, develop a strategic editorial calendar and build your team from scratch.  A social strategy won’t be an add on, it needs to be baked into the gameplan at the beginning.  You’ll work closely with the head of product and the GM for the business to ensure that your goals for the content match the goals for the business. We would love a deeply visual editor who can tap into the mega-infographic trend and apply it to sports.

Inside Skinny:

Even if you haven’t served as the editorial lead for a sports brand, our client is open to speaking to you if you have a strong news pedigree and an borderline obsession around sports. They want fresh ideas from an individual who can identify white space that the other big boys have ignored.

Net-Net:

If you have a knack for turn-arounds and rethinks, you will have a great run here.

We have but one over-arching rule for comments: Do not add to the chaos of the universe.

  • This blog is devoted to developing a point of view around the Future of Work through the lens of the digital creative class. It offers some of the best career writing out there to help you get ahead as well as some brand new bloggers livin' the dream and tellin' it like it is. We encourage you to use the comments to drive conversations to the next level, bounce ideas off our bloggers, challenge them, and engage in dialogue with your fellow readers.
  • Disagreement is fine. If one of our bloggers gets your goat, say so, but elevate the conversation. Substantiate. Strive to teach. Your words might actually change someone's opinion. Don't just rant.
  • Sign your name. Anonymity makes you a wimp.
  • If you're just commenting to get your handle out there, please be clever about it. Or witty. We'll delete unimaginative self-promotion.
  • We'll also likely delete comments that are vulgar, inadvertently or maliciously off-topic, spammy, creepy or sloppy.
